Walter McManus

Walter McManus, born on August 25th 1895 in Bridgenorth Ontario, Canada. He lived in Bridgenorth as a farmer. Walter live somewhere between 1094 and 1102 East Communication Road. Walter’s next of kin was listed as his father, John McManus. At age 20, Walter enlisted on January 31st 1916.  Walter was part of the Canadian Mounted Rifles. He was part of the 57th battalion. He and his battalion fought in many battles. Mount Sorrel, the Battle of Somme, Flers-Courcelette, Ancre Heights, Arras, and Vimy Ridge. Unfortunately the day came when Johnson was notified of his son’s unfortunate death on August 23rd 1917. Walter died in the battle of Hill 70 alongside friends and brothers. Walter is buried in the Noeux-Les-Mines Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France.

From page 1 of McManus' attestation papers (below) we can see he was born in Bridgenorth Ontario Canada, on August 25th 1895. His calling or occupation was a farmer. His next of kin was his father John McManus.

From page 2 of McManus' attestation papers (below) we can see he signed up when he was 20 years old on January 31st 1916. He had a dark complexion, dark brown hair and blue eyes. He was 5 feet 10 inches, and had no distinctive marks or scars. 

To the left we have page 287 of The Book of Remembrance. Inside the box reads, Pte. McManus, Walter. 5'C.M.R.

Which translates to; Private Walter McManus of The 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles.
